In a nutshell: I can take something chunky off your COO's plate that is important but they just don't have bandwidth for, on a part-time or project basis; especially if it relates to customer ops, data analytics, business economics or people and culture. Read more below.

My advisory/consulting work

Since selling my startup and having a baby (which happened conveniently close together), I've been mostly a stay-at-home dad - both because it's incredibly fulfilling in its own right, and as a bit of a career break while I decide what I'd like to do next. That being said, I do take on some advisory/consulting work here and there and I love helping founders of early-stage companies solve interesting problems.

I do this either on a project basis (coming in to solve a specific issue or build out a team/process), or on an hourly basis (mentoring, coaching and/or upskilling existing teams).

My background

I'm a startup founder and operator and a former economic consultant specialising in behavioural economics. You can read about my full experience on LinkedIn, but the bottom line is that I've had a varied career, in three main chapters:

  • 5+ years in the IDF, where I learned how to analyse, interpret and summarise information for decisions-makers, how to work well under pressure, how to lead a large team within a highly hierarchical setting and how to train cohorts of incoming analysts.

  • 4+ years as an economic consultant, where I learned how to conduct robust economic and strategic analysis, work with F500 execs and senior public servants, effect change for corporate clients, lead teams of analysts and manage commercial engagements from pitch to delivery.

  • 4+ years as a startup founder and COO, where I learned how to build a company from scratch and run it through its entire life-cycle, from conception through validation, fundraising, hiring, product development, launch, growth and to acquisition.

I've also had lots of temporary and part-time roles throughout my life, from a carpenter's assistant to a camp counsellor to a neuroscience lab assistant and a founding member of a charity, and have often taken on side projects to channel my curiousity and energy. But the above three are the full-time chapters.

As for sectors, most of my background in tech is in B2B SaaS and marketplaces, applied to HR tech, employee engagement and events. As a consultant I've dabbled in many industries, from sewage treatment to solar energy, but most of my experience was in financial services, retail and healthcare, with a focus on behavioural economics and commercial strategy.

What I can help with

In the earliest stages (pre-seed and seed):

  • Validation: Problem discovery, solution validation, customer interviews.

  • Commercial strategy: Go-to-market, competitor and market analysis.

  • People: Co-founder dynamics, hiring, building out culture and internal processes.

  • Finances: Business model, financial models, pricing, setting up revenue ops systems.

  • Customer ops: Setting up customer journeys from scratch.

  • Fundraising: Pitch crafting and practice, due diligence materials, managing the raise.

In more established startups/scale-ups:

  • Internal operations: People, processes, performance. I can help with hiring flows and improve internal processes, but my biggest passion is in team-building, from organising offsites to working on feedback, psychological safety and building high-performing teams.

  • Customer operations: Improving onboarding, activation, retention or upsell, or doing a customer journey audit to review the entire process and try and fix the parts that don't work. I can come in and help set up a new process (e.g. for a new product/market) or diagnose and improve an existing one.

  • Analytics: Set up, train and improve data analytics teams. While I have done plenty of hands-on work, my specialty is picking the right tool for the job, connecting the data to the right commercial questions and making sure teams run smoothly and efficiently.

  • Economics: Set up, review, improve and change business models, from pricing and segmentation to unit economics, margins, and competitive positioning. I'm not an accountant but I do know my way around a financial model, and love making numbers add up commercially as well as technically.

What I can't help with

  • Growth: If your problem is purely growth-focussed, like setting up an inbound or outbound funnel from scratch or fixing an existing funnel that's broken, I'd be happy to refer you to some great growth consultants and agencies if you tell me a bit more about what you're looking for.

  • Product: While I can support with some product-related questions, if it's purely a product management issue, like building out a product team or creating a roadmap based on a defined commercial strategy, then I'm not the right person. Happy to refer you to some fantastic PM consultants/coaches.

  • Industry expertise: If you need someone who knows every nook and cranny of your specific industry and segment then I won't be able to help (with the exception of HR tech, events, employee engagement, and to a lesser extent fintech).
